Among the projects proposed under the 2012 and 2013 MATTM Biodiversity Directive, the one entitled "The establishment of the network of ancient forests in the National Parks of the southern Apennines" is one of the most significant and important for biodiversity conservation.

It is the result of a partnership between five national parks: Pollino National Park, Aspromonte National Park, Sila National Park, Cilento National Park and the Lucano Apennine National Park. The project leader is the Pollino National Park.
